Top 12 Tips on How to Build a High Converting Landing Page with AI

How to Build a High Converting Landing Page with AI — My Tips (From Someone Who Has Made All Mistakes First)

Confession.

Three years ago I spent eleven hours making a landing page for my online course.

Eleven.

Hours.

I agonized over headlines, made my buttons all different colors, and read every word on the page to myself several times before publishing at 2 AM. I felt like a genius and ate a whole sleeve of Oreos to celebrate. I even fell asleep happy. Conversion rate on the page? 0.4%. You guys, I’m not even sure my mom clicked the button, because she’s clicked on literally everything since kindergarten.

Today I can build a similar landing page in about two hours that has a conversion rate of 8-12%. Often higher. The difference? I stopped trying to do everything myself and started to lean into the power of AI, and now I’m going to tell you how I do it. Specifically. I’m going to walk you through my entire process, with all the messy details included. No fluff. No “just use ChatGPT and you’re set!” nonsense. The real process. Without beating around the bush.

First Things First: AI Can’t Fix a Bad Offer

Before I get into all the nitty-gritty details I want to share with you, I feel obligated to share some context, because I learned it the hard way. No matter how smart or catchy or beautiful it is, no amount of AI wizardry will be able to rescue a bad offer.

I’ve seen it happen myself. I’ve used AI to write copy for a product that simply no one wanted, and it didn’t fix anything. The landing page looked pretty, the text was elegant, but the concept behind it was so ridiculous, no one was interested. At all.

Before you begin to work on your landing page, make sure you have:

✓ A real problem you’re solving for your customers

✓ A specific customer persona in mind

✓ Some kind of proof that your solution actually works (testimonials, results data, case studies, etc.)

Once you have those three things, you’re ready to start using AI.

Step 1: Use AI to Dig Into Your Audience’s Brain

This one is super important. Before I write a single line of copy for my landing page, I do what I call a “brain dump interrogation.” I ask AI (usually ChatGPT or Claude, depending on my mood) to act as a certain type of customer and write me a journal entry from their point of view about a problem my product/service solves.

I ask it to include certain phrases and words, and to be as emotional and specific as possible, as if they were complaining to a friend. The result? Pure gold, because it’s real verbiage that your potential customers would use, and it’s the kinds of phrases and words that will make your landing page copy resonate.

I’ll save the best parts of these responses to use as inspiration for my headlines and subheadings, because that’s where customers will stop scrolling if they see something that speaks directly to them.

Pro tip: Ask it multiple times! Each response will be slightly different, and I like to save all of them in a Google Doc for reference. This is one of my most valuable resources, and I’m not giving up my treasure.

Step 2: Generate (Way Too Many) Headlines

I am, in all seriousness, terrible at writing headlines. So bad at it, in fact, that if I were to do this step on my own, I would produce something like “Get Better at Freelancing” and think it’s a genius headline.

Nope, not genius at all.

To avoid creating such disasters on my own, I’ll ask AI to generate me 25-30 headlines for my landing page. I’ll provide it with the key phrases from Step 1, the benefit of my offer, and my target audience, and I’ll ask for everything it can think of. Most of them will be meh at best, but there will be 3-5 that will catch my eye as interesting or unique in some way, and I’ll save them for later testing.

I won’t choose one and be done with it, though — I’ll take my top 3-4 favorites and test them against each other, which we’ll get to in a bit.

Here’s an example of one of my favorite headlines that came from this process. I was working on a landing page for an email marketing course for one of my clients, and one of the headlines that came up in this process was:

“Your Emails Aren’t Getting Ignored Because They’re Bad. They’re Getting Ignored Because They’re Boring.”

I laughed out loud when I first read it, and it went on to outperform the second place headline in this test by nearly 40%. Not bad for an AI-generated headline, especially since the second place finisher was also AI-generated (I merely edited it to sound more like my client).

Step 3: Edit Like a Human (Because You Are One)

Please, please, for the love of all that is holy, don’t just copy and paste your AI copy onto your landing page and call it a day.

I’ve done it, and it reads like a bot wrote it. There’s an unmistakable smell of artificiality about it, and no matter how much you try to disguise it, it will always read like something a machine created.

Real human copy has texture and rhythm and variety in sentence structure. It doesn’t have the same symmetry as something created by an algorithm. It may have some short sentences punctuated by a single long one, but it will always have a certain je ne sais quoi that makes it sound like something a real human being wrote.

My rule of thumb for editing copy that’s been generated by AI is to read it out loud to myself. If I stumble over any words or phrases, I’ll edit them out. I’ll add some of my own unique quirks and personality to the text, like parenthetical asides or em dashes, to give it some character. I’ll also look out for any phrases that sound like they could have been generated by a robot (such as “in today’s fast-paced digital landscape”) and delete them. I’ll also insert more specific language where appropriate. Instead of saying “Many people,” I might say “I spoke with 47 freelancers last month, and 43 of them said…” The goal is to make it sound like it came from you!

Step 4: Structure Your Landing Page Like a Story (You Can Use AI for This Too)

Every truly great landing page has a structure that tells a story, whether it’s obvious or not. That’s right — even the most boring, feature-filled landing pages are really just stories disguised as sales pages. The good news is, you can use AI to help you create one that will hook your reader from the very first word.

Here’s my go-to structure for just about any landing page:

1. Hook (Hero Section)

Include your headline and subheadline that speaks to the problem or desire your reader is experiencing, and a clear CTA button (yes, above the fold, don’t @ me)

2. Problem (Agitation)

“This. This is the worst. Nothing seems to be working.”

This is where you’ll include those phrases from Step 1.

3. Bridge

What’s new about your approach/product?

This is where my aha moment usually goes — I’ll ask AI to help me draft it, and then I’ll rewrite it in my own words

4. Solution

What you’re offering, explained clearly

Turn features into benefits (AI is great at this — just ask it to do it!)

5. Social Proof

Testimonials, numbers, logos, screenshots, etc.

AI can help you format testimonials for impact, but try to use real testimonials when possible.

6. The Offer + CTA

Pricing, what’s included, bonuses, etc.

A clear call to action.

7. FAQ / Objection Handling

I like to ask AI “What objections would [target customer] have about buying [product]?” and address them all, because I’ve seen conversion rates drop by as much as 3 percentage points when objection handling is skipped

One time I skipped objection handling because I didn’t think my page needed it and it was already long enough, and my conversion rate dropped by 3% compared to a similar previous page. Never skip objection handling again.

Step 5: Design Your Page with the Help of AI

Sorry, designers — I peaked creatively in 4th grade when I drew a really good horse (which looked suspiciously like a dog, but my teacher was kind enough not to mention it). Today I use AI-assisted design tools that have transformed my process:

Relume AI — This tool lets me generate wireframes for my landing page based on a simple description of what I want. I’ll describe the section breakdown I came up with in Step 4 and it will generate a wireframe I can export to Figma or Webflow. It’s amazing, and almost unfair.

Midjourney / DALL-E — For unique custom illustrations, images, and graphics when stock photos feel too, well, stock-y.

AI color palette generators — Tools like Coolors or Khroma use AI to suggest color palettes, which is helpful since my design sense is that of a raccoon.

Figma + AI plugins — There are a ton of awesome plugins that can help with things like writing microcopy (button text, form labels, etc.)

Design used to be my weakest link in the landing page creation process, but now it’s one of my strongest.

Step 6: A/B Test Your Copy With AI-Generated Variants

Those 3-4 headlines we saved from Step 2 are about to earn their keep. I’ll set up a test (I usually use Google Optimize — RIP — or now VWO, or sometimes just the built-in tools in Unbounce or Leadpages) using variants of those headlines, and I’ll also experiment with other copy elements like:

✓ CTA button text (AI can generate 20 options in seconds — “Start My Free Trial” vs “Show Me How It Works” vs “Yes, I Want In” — you’d be surprised how impactful it can be)

✓ Hero section layout (image left vs right vs none)

✓ Social proof placement (above the fold vs after the problem section)

Here’s one of my favorite A/B tests I’ve ever done — I was faced with a choice between two CTA buttons. The first one said “Get Started” and the second one said “Build My First Campaign in 10 Minutes.” The second option — which AI suggested when I prompted it with “Write CTA button text that includes a specific time-bound outcome” — had nearly double the conversion rate of the first button. DOUBLE. Two words in the prompt made all the difference.

Step 7: Use AI to Write Your Thank You / Confirmation Page Too

Your thank you page is prime real estate — someone just said YES to you! They’re warm and engaged, and this is the perfect time to reinforce their decision and set expectations for what comes next. I’ll ask AI to help me draft a confirmation page that reminds them of what they’ve decided to do, when to expect to hear from me, and what I recommend they do next.

This small addition has helped drive up my revenue by as much as 15-20% on some launches!

My Favorite AI Tools for Landing Pages (The List)

Since people always ask, here are some of my favorite tools for different aspects of landing page creation:

What I Use It For Tool

Copywriting & brainstorming ChatGPT (GPT-4), Claude

Headline analysis CoSchedule Headline Analyzer (has AI elements)

Wireframing Relume AI

Page building Webflow, Unbounce, Carrd (for simple ones)

Image generation Midjourney, DALL-E 3

A/B testing copy variants VWO, Unbounce (built-in)

SEO for landing pages Surfer SEO, Clearscope

Chatbots on landing pages Intercom, Drift (with AI)

I switch between tools frequently — I’m not attached to any one of them. But I will say that Claude and I are in a committed relationship. (Kidding. Mostly.)

The Mistakes I Still See (And Have Made)

Don’t trust AI blindly — it hallucinates. It makes things up. I once had it write a statistic into my copy that simply wasn’t true — “87% of marketers agree…” — and when I went to research the source of the statistic, it wasn’t there. The AI had fabricated the study. Always fact-check what it says.

Don’t make the page all about you — AI tends to write “We offer…” and “Our product…” a lot, and it should be “You get…” and “Imagine if you could…” The word “you” should appear on your landing page approximately one billion times.

Don’t have too many CTAs or offers on one page — one page, one goal, one action. If your landing page is asking people to subscribe AND buy AND follow AND read your blog AND download a freebie, you’ve lost them. I learned this after a particularly embarrassing page that had SEVEN different buttons going to five different places. What was I thinking? (I wasn’t.)

And finally, don’t ignore mobile — 60%+ of my landing page traffic is mobile. AI can help you write shorter, punchier copy for mobile, but you’ll still need to make sure your page looks good on a phone. Always — no exceptions.

The Honest Truth

Here’s the honest truth — AI has reduced my landing page creation time by about 70%, and my conversion rates have roughly tripled since I started using it. I spend less time staring at a blank page wondering how to throw my laptop out the window. But the landing pages that convert the best are the ones where I’ve put in genuine human effort and strategy. Where I’ve understood my audience. Where I’ve layered in authentic stories, testimonials, and personality. AI is my best assistant — it’s not my strategist, and that’s still me.

The magic happens when we combine our human brains with the power of AI. You bring the empathy, experience, and humanity — it’s where we shine brightest. And AI brings speed, variety, and an incredible ability to generate lots of options without needing a snack break. (Unlike me. I need many snack breaks.)

TL;DR — The Quick-Hit Version

✓ Mine your audience’s language using AI persona prompts

✓ Generate tons of headlines and pick your favorites

✓ Edit everything to sound human (read it out loud!)

✓ Structure your page as a story

✓ Use AI design tools to wireframe and build faster

✓ A/B test AI-generated copy variants against each other

✓ Don’t forget the thank you page — it’s a conversion goldmine

✓ Always, always fact-check AI output

✓ Keep the human in the loop — that’s you, and you matter

Now go build something that converts. And if your first attempt only gets 0.4%? That’s fine. That’s where I started too. You’re in good company. 🖤
